Is it time for your AC system to be repaired?
While it seems hard to believe, temperatures in north Georgia have already reached the 70s – and spring is still officially some weeks away.
So, what happens when you fire up your air conditioning unit for the first time in months?
Hopefully everything clicks on seamlessly and you pick up right where you left off from fall. But what if it doesn’t? There’s a solid chance that, especially if you have not properly maintained your unit, you’ll be facing reduced output and perhaps even failure once the heat of a Georgia spring/summer gets going full bore.
That is why there is no time to lose. If you have not serviced your air HVAC unit in some time, now is the time. And if you have already experienced malfunctions in this early going, then there is certainly no time like the present to find the best options for air conditioning repair.
There are some things you can do yourself to help avoid potential issues, and diagnose any that may already be occurring:
-
- Check your air filter. Make sure it is no older than three months. And if you have household pets, you should even think of replacing it every 60 days.
-
- Determine the last time your HVAC unit was serviced. Ideally, you should have it looked at by a professional technician at least once a year.
-
- Take a look at the unit itself. Are there pools of water or refrigerant anywhere around the unit? Is it making any unusual sounds (banging, grinding, squeaks)?
-
- Check the temperature differential. Once it reaches a warm enough outdoor temperature, test your HVAC unit by setting your thermostat for 10 degrees lower than the outdoor temperature. Place a thermometer inside one of your air ducts and another thermometer inside one of your return ducts. Take note of the reported temperatures and if the difference between the supply and return is less than 14 degrees, it is a sign that perhaps your system requires more refrigerant.
